Telephone Fees - Billing Tips

Provide the start and end time when submitting claims for fee items G10002 and G10003, if the times are not provided, your claim will be refused with explanatory code CF (time called or time service was rendered is missing or invalid).

Use the most appropriate diagnostic code relating to the patient’s condition when submitting the telephone fees.

Fee items G10001, G10002 and G10003 are not billable in addition to another service on the same day for the same patient by the same practitioner.
Example 1: A practitioner bills G10001 and fee item 33373 (colonoscopy with flexible colonoscope-biopsy) for the same date of service.  Fee item G10001 would be refused with explanatory code K3 (processed according to the description of the fee item, or the note relating to the fee item in the MSC payment schedule).
* G10001 is also not applicable if the call is to arrange for an expedited diagnostic or surgical procedure within 24 hours.

Example 2:  A practitioner bills G10002 and G10003 for the same date of service. The second claim would be refused with explanatory code K3 (processed according to the description of the fee item, or the note relating to the fee item in the MSC payment schedule).
* The onus is on the practitioner to bill appropriately for the type of service rendered, if the conversation was initiated by a Specialist, General Practitioner, or Allied Care Provider, fee item G10002 should be billed.  If the conversation is with the patient, or a patient’s representative, fee item G10003 should be billed.

Fee items G10001 to G10003 cannot be billed simultaneously with salary, sessional or service contract arrangements.
For example: A Paediatrician is under contract with a Health Authority and is paid a sessional rate for the services the Paediatrician renders. The Paediatrician sees the patient in hospital on Dec. 1 and follows up with the patient’s parent the following day and bills fee item G10003. This claim would be refused with explanatory code NW (this fee item is not payable for services provided by physicians who are working under a salaried, sessional or service contract arrangement).
